Three Steps to a More Mindful Morning

The morning can be one of the most chaotic times of the day, however it can also be the most powerful in determining how the rest of our day proceeds. For example, waking up anxious about the day ahead can cause what seems to be a spiral of events that make our day seem rushed, out of control, and exhausting. On the other hand, if we use the morning to center ourselves with mindfulness or self-care, we can move into the day collected, productive, and energized.

1) Avoid Social Media
Our first instinct in the morning may be to immediately scroll through social media as we are lying in our warm bed trying to wake ourselves. Comparisons, negative feed, and judgements is the last thing we need to start our day. Skip out on the social media and instead allow yourself to wake up in in a positive environment free of comparison.

2) Check In With Yourself

Evaluating your mental and physical needs in the beginning of the day can help you determine what you need for yourself in order to make the most of the day. If you notice you are feeling anxious and frustrated, what can you do in that moment for yourself to prevent more overwhelm throughout your day? It is also important to check in physically and ask yourself what your body needs. Whether it be a light stretch, a yoga session, or more physical movement, allow yourself 5-10 minutes to honor what your body needs. When you give your mind and body the attention it deserves it will reward you with things such as increased productivity, mental clarity and awareness, and increased energy levels.

3) Take A Quite Moment.
There can be so much noise in the world around us. Other’s words, thoughts, opinions can often mask our own. Use the morning to process your own thoughts and take a moment to reflect, visualize, goal-set, relax, etc. It is up to you how you spend these moments.
